SOFWAVE FAQ

Why Sinus Problems Can Persist

Chronic Inflammation

When sinus tissues remain inflamed, they can become swollen and congested. This can make normal drainage more difficult and contribute to ongoing pressure and discomfort.

Congestion & Poor Drainage

Mucus and fluid need to move effectively out of the sinus and nasal passages. When drainage is impaired, congestion and pressure can persist.

Seasonal Allergies

Allergic reactions can cause inflammation and swelling of the nasal tissues, leading to congestion, runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, and sinus pressure.

Lymphatic Drainage

The lymphatic system plays an important role in managing fluid and supporting tissue health. The head and neck have an extensive lymphatic network, and understanding these pathways can be especially important when treating facial and sinus congestion.

The FIG Difference

SoftWave delivers true shockwave energy to the tissues of the face and sinus region. The gentle mechanical stimulation supports your body’s natural response to inflammation while promoting circulation and fluid movement.

At FIG, your SoftWave treatment is guided by a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT-LANA) with specialized knowledge of the lymphatic system and head and neck lymphatic drainage.

Lymphedema therapists receive specialized training in how fluid moves through the body, how swelling develops, and how to support lymphatic drainage. This knowledge is especially valuable when treating the face, head, and neck—areas with complex lymphatic pathways.

We combine SoftWave with gentle lymphatic drainage and other hands-on techniques, carefully considering where fluid needs to move and how different areas of the head and neck are connected.

This allows us to go beyond simply applying SoftWave to the area where you feel pressure or congestion.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you give the Softwave treatments?

For the treatment, ultrasound gel is applied to the SoftWave applicator before it is gently moved over the face.

You may notice clicking sounds and feel gentle pulses as the acoustic waves stimulate the tissues and support your body’s natural healing response.

We’ll provide simple post-treatment instructions for you to follow at home.

The initial series consists of six sessions, with each session lasting approximately 50 minutes. After the initial series, maintenance sessions may be recommended once a month to every three months, depending on your needs. Maintenance sessions typically last 20–25 minutes.

What should I do to prepare for my first appointment?

You may arrive with sunscreen or makeup on. Before treatment, we will gently remove sunscreen, foundation, or other products from the treatment areas so SoftWave can effectively deliver healing energy to the underlying tissues.

If you need to wear makeup afterward, please allow a little extra time for removal and reapplication.

What is the recovery process after undergoing treatment with the Softwave treatments?

Your skin may be mildly sensitive after treatment. To support your skin while it settles:

  • Avoid excessive heat: For 48 hours, avoid hot tubs, Jacuzzis, saunas, and strenuous exercise that causes your skin to become very hot.
  • Keep skincare gentle: For about one week, use gentle, non-irritating skincare products. Avoid scrubs, toners, glycolic acid, retinoids (Retin-A or retinol), and bleaching creams such as hydroquinone.
  • Protect your skin from the sun: Avoid direct sun exposure to the treated areas. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, wear a hat when outdoors, and reapply sunscreen every 2 hours when exposed to the sun.

Who is NOT a candidate for treating swelling/lymphedema with Softwave Therapy?

SoftWave may not be appropriate for everyone. Treatment may be postponed or avoided if you:

  • Have an active infection in the treatment area
  • Have a known or suspected blood clot (DVT) or thrombosis
  • Have active cancer or a tumor in the treatment area
  • Have a significant bleeding or clotting disorder or are taking blood-thinning medication
  • Have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device near the treatment area
  • Are pregnant, depending on the treatment area
  • Have an open wound or significantly compromised skin in the treatment area
  • Have recently received a cortisone or steroid injection in the treatment area
  • Have a history of fainting or a strong vagal response triggered by sounds, vibrations, or specific sound frequencies
  • Have tinnitus, sound sensitivity, or other sound-related conditions that may be aggravated by the clicking sound of the SoftWave applicator

If you have a history of fainting, tinnitus, sound sensitivity, or a strong response to specific sounds or frequencies, please let us know before your appointment so we can determine whether SoftWave is appropriate for you.

If your swelling is new, sudden, unexplained, painful, or accompanied by redness or warmth, please seek medical evaluation before receiving SoftWave therapy.
